Multi-layer caching is a technique that uses multiple levels of cache (L1, L2, CDN, etc.) hierarchically to store and retrieve data. This approach significantly improves application performance by reducing latency and database load, because data is served from the fastest (closest) cache first. Architecture and Flow of Multi-Layer Caching This system operates by checking cache layers from the fastest/smallest to the slowest/largest: L1 Cache (In-Memory/Local): The fastest cache in the application’s local memory (e.g., RAM), used for the most frequently accessed data. L2 Cache (Distributed/Out-of-Process): Larger and slightly slower than L1, usually a distributed cache (e.g., Redis, NCache) shared across multiple servers. CDN & Browser Cache: The outermost layer for static content, reducing the load on the main server. Database: The primary data source, accessed only when a cache miss occurs in all layers. Key Benefits and Considerations Maximum Performance: Significantly reduces latency because data is rarely fetched from the main database. Scalability: Handles diverse workloads and high volume by distributing the load across multiple layers. Data Consistency: One of the biggest challenges is maintaining data synchronization across layers. Invalidation Strategy: It is important to use Cache Invalidation Chains or TTL (Time-to-Live) Hierarchies to prevent stale data.
